Тhe First to Come

The first person who on Christmas Day comes to a house is called Položajnik, one who starts first. Položajnik symbolises the Three Wise Men who, following a star, came from the East to pay homage to the newborn Christ Child. The hostess of the house serves some food to the guest and gives him a gift. It is supposed that the first guest brings luck for the whole forthcoming year.

It is important that the Christmas related customs along with all the other church holiday ones are understood properly. They are not there to be observed as compulsory, because something bad may happen if they are not observed in a particular way or not at all. Customs and traditions vary from region to region. They are all there to help us on our way to God.
