The Čаčаk Plum

Plums are grown mostly in Šumаdiјa and Western Serbia and there is one sort that got its name after the town of Čаčak. Čаčаk is the town in the Moravica region, and after the hard 1990’s, with its fast growing private entrepreneurship it managed to impose itself as the centre of the region.  In 2006, there was the First Plum Symposium in Čаčak.

RELIGION AND TRADITION

In the Оvčаr-Kаblаr gorge near Čаčak, there is the Serbian Holy – some dozen monasteries with the oldest built in the Nеmаnjić and Lаzаrеvić periods.

HISTORY

n the Roman times, the region was part of the Dalmatia province. In the Čаčak area, there are the preserved remains of the Roman period villas. In the period of Stеfаn Nеmаnja, Čаčаk belonged to his brother, Strаcimiru, who built the Моrаvski Grаdаc Monastery, as a bishopric seat. The present name was first recorded in 1408 in a Dubrovnik document. In 1814, in the village of Тrnаvа near Čаčak, a revolt broke up, called the HаdžiPrоdаn’s Rebellion, but was quashed in blood. The following year, during the Second Serbian Uprising, there was a Battle of Čаčak between 25 April and 13 June, in the section from Ljubićа Hill to the town trench. After the liberation of Serbia, the town population was only 900. In 1941, Čаčаk and its surroundings were the centre of the revolt against the Germans, but also the site of the Partisan and Chetnik conflict.
