Mother Jevrosima

A King Vukašin’s charter contains a record of his wife’s name, Aljena (Allene), mother to his sons, Marko and Andrijaš (Andrew). The legend, however, rendered the queen unknown, naming Jevrosima, the voivode Momčilo’s sister as mother to Kraljevia Marko. Marko himself had more of Jevrosima’s characteristics than of Vukašin’s, and it was pointed out that he was more like his uncle than his father. Mother Jevrosima represented the conscience of sometimes quite short-tempered and irascible Marko, she is a model of righteousness, morality and the Christian values. Famous are her words in the song Uroš i Mrnjavčevići:

„Nemoj sine govoriti krivo,
ni po babu ni po stričevima,
već po pravdi Boga istinoga;
Nemoj sine izgubiti duše;
Bolje ti je izgubiti glavu,
nego svoju ogrješiti dušu.“
