Princess Milica

Princess Milica was the wife to the Serbian Prince Lazara and the only woman to rule over Serbia in history. She comes from the Nemanjić ruling family. Her father was Prince Vratko, traditionally known as Jug Bogdan in an epic song. Vratko was the great grandson to Nemanja’s son Vukan.

After the Battle of Kosovo and the demise of Prince Lazara, Princess Milica made peace with the Ottomans and ruled wisely over what was left of Serbia, quenching any disagreements between  her sons, Stefan and Vuk. She built the Ljubostinja Monastery, where she died and was buried in 1405, as a nun Eugenia. her sons were: Dobrovoj (died soon after birth),Stefan and Vuk; daughters Jelena, Mara, Dragana, Teodora and Olivera.

RELIGION AND TRADITION

Kneginja Milica je i pravoslavna svetiteljka. U Srpskoj Crkvi slavi se kao prepodobna Evgenija zajedno sa svojim sinom, svetim despotom Stefanom, 1. avgusta.
